Cost of data breaches declining globally

The average cost of a data breach is $3.62 million globally, a 10% decrease from the 2016 results, according to IBM's latest Cost of Data Breach Study, conducted in collaboration with the Ponemon Institute. This is the first time since the global study was created that there has been an overall decrease in the cost. On average, these data breaches cost companies $141 per lost or stolen record.

Two thirds of organizations aren’t prepared to recover from a cyber attack, according to a new study by the Ponemon Institute on behalf of Resilient (an IBM Company), and only a third of organizations feel they have a high level of cyber resilience.

In fact, more than 50% of SMBs across North America have been breached in the last 12 months, according to a new study commissioned by Keeper Security, and conducted by the Ponemon Institute.

Companies that have predefined Business Continuity Management (BCM) processes in place are able to find and contain data breaches more quickly, discovering breaches 52 days earlier and containing them 36 days faster than companies without BCM. This is according to a study sponsored by IBM and conducted by the Ponemon Institute.

The costs of a cyber attack may not be as high as first thought, according to new study by the Ponemon Institute carried out on behalf of Palo Alto Networks which found that the average hacker makes only $15,000 on average per attack and generates an income of less than $29,000 per year, a quarter of what a cyber security professional could make during the same period.

​According to a new study by the ​Ponemon Institute, the average consolidated total cost of a data breach is $3.8 million, representing a 23% increase since 2013. The annual '​Cost of Data Breach Study' also found that the average cost incurred for each lost or stolen record containing sensitive and confidential information increased 6% from a consolidated average of $145 to $154.
