Confidence in disaster recovery plans falls for second consecutive year

Organizations are now less confident in their ability to recover from an incident, according to a new study conducted by Databarracks, which suggests that contributing factors include a lack of testing, budgetary constraints and the growing cyber threat landscape.

Many organizations don’t devote enough attention to mission-critical applications when creating disaster recovery (DR) plans, and one of the biggest reasons is the 'resiliency perception gap', or the gap between executives’ perceptions of the effectiveness of their resiliency strategies and how successful these plans actually are at protecting against application outages or downtime.

When it comes to assessing an organization’s ability to recover from a disaster, a significant disconnect exists between C-Suite executives and IT professionals. While nearly 7 in 10 CEOs, CFOs or COOs feel their organization is very prepared to recover from a disaster, according to a study by Evolve IP, less than half of IT pros (44.5%) are as confident.

Small and medium sized businesses are increasingly focused on disaster recovery readiness, with as many as 84% noting that several days of IT downtime would result in moderate to catastrophic costs and loss. To make sure they are covered in the event of a disaster, more than half (53%) rely on more than one DR method to 'hedge their bets' to ensure recoverability.

​A new study titled ‘An inside look at disaster recovery planning’ has revealed just how little employees know about their organization’s planned response to a crisis. In a survey by HOB, 40% of respondents stated that their company either does not have systems in place to protect data in an emergency, or they are not aware of the existence of these procedures.

​More than a third (34%) of IT professionals report their organization has suffered a major incident that has required them to implement disaster recovery procedures. In the event of a disaster or other incident occurring, 51% believe they are only ‘somewhat prepared’ to recover their IT and related assets.
