​Far too many of the United Kingdom’s small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are ill-prepared for the effects of bad weather and the disruption it could bring. Nearly half (44%) have no business continuity plan in place to ensure they can continue operating, while over two-thirds (69%) do not have any insurance cover to protect them.

​Bad weather conditions are hitting the revenues of over two thirds (69%) of small to medium sized businesses in the UK according to new research from specialist insurance broker ​Towergate. This is an increase of almost a quarter compared to last year where nearly half (46%) of businesses were affected.

London’s businesses are ill-prepared for climate change risks as 54% of FTSE 100 firms have no business adaptation strategy in place for climate change. Evidence suggests that 60% of small and medium sized businesses have no plan in place to deal with extreme weather conditions.

Many business activities and the resources that support them can be disrupted by severe weather. In fact, a survey by the Chartered Management Institute, in association with the BCI, BSI and the Cabinet Office, found that 54% of businesses reported being disrupted by severe weather in 2012, making it the number one cause of business disruption for the fourth year running.
