​Implementing a Business Continuity Management System which meets and exceeds ISO 22301 is a challenging, but important undertaking for an organization committed to ​business continuity. I have recently been leading a project for ​PlanB, where we helped a marketing/logistics firm achieve ISO 22301 (with one minor non-conformity!).

A new report by the Business Continuity Institute, supported by certification body NQA, has shown that 6 out of 10 organizations adopt ISO 22301, the international standard for business continuity management. Organizations with strong top management commitment to standardising business continuity practice are four times more likely to adopt ISO 22301 than those who do not.

Business continuity is not that much a new concept. Being not new also means that it probably is due to be redesigned. Since the inception of Business Continuity Management in the late 80s and early 90s of the last century, the world has changed quite a bit. The main concepts, procedures and processes of BCM however have not changed that much in the past 25 or so years.

Tip number 1: The lack of a regular supply of good quality biscuits is the first non-conformity! I realise that there are many BC practitioners who, although practiced in the creation and maintenance of a Business Continuity Management System (BCMS), have yet to seek certification to a standard.
