Any professional dealing with supply chains knows how complicated its management is. Supply chain disruptions are Murphy’s Law exemplified – anything that can go wrong, will. In the last five years, respondents of the global BCI Supply Chain Resilience Survey have named all sorts of consequences that supply chain disruptions may bring.

I’m relatively new to business continuity management, with only a little over ten years’ experience in this industry that is said to be made up of the 'Men in Grey'. Someone said this to me at last year’s BCI World Conference, I then looked in the mirror and sure enough that was me already. So what incenses me and what gives me hope that as an Institute we are making progress?

With this year’s Executive Forum running on 12th and 13th June in Brussels, it seems a good time to look back at the two earlier Forums. What does happen when 600+ years of BC experience converges on Brussels each year for two days?

How are organisations dealing with the challenge? On the question of multiple tiers in the supply chain, there was common agreement on the need to gain better visibility but divergence of approach in practice. According to a recent IBM survey, the biggest threat perceived by Business Continuity professionals is cyber-security. Some of the challenges faced include BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) which is on the increase; the widespread use of social media with its pros and cons; workforce mobility and the increasing use of cloud-based solutions.

BC Predictions for 2013 - 7 to 10 - Final edition of our prediction posts!

Blog posts   •   Feb 12, 2013 11:17 GMT

This blog brings to an end my review of BCI predictions for 2013 – mainly because as we have now reached February, they are beginning to look more like news comment than forecasts. Predictions 7 through 10 were about business failures, sustainability, increased outsourcing problems and social media respectively.

Preparing for the worst, whatever the weather

Set against the background of the recent severe flooding that was affected or at least threatened to affect large areas of the UK, putting both business and homes at risk, there is no better time than now for businesses to think about how prepared they are to deal with such disruptions and to take the first steps towards preparing for the worst.

At the start of the year it is always tempting to forward and make some predictions. Like New Year resolutions, however, they are generally much modified as soon as they come into contact with reality. Nevertheless at the BCI we asked our experts what they thought might be important Business Continuity trends in 2013 and got some interesting responses.
