The BCI 20/20 Think Tank was created with the view of convening thought leaders worldwide who will drive the discipline forward and fine tune it to meet the needs of the future. It seems to me that BCM as we liked it has reached the end of its original lifecycle. Critical Infrastructures (CIs) ask us to consider a different picture of reality, one of complexity which is hard to handle. A map of interdependencies between CIs shows how the weakness or failure of one might impact on the entire chain.

CIOs, business continuity managers and IT managers understand the value of forward-thinking business continuity and resiliency solutions. They know that cloud computing can lower recovery point objectives and recovery time objectives, dramatically improving the availability of data and applications at a time when organizations increasingly depend on the availability of their data and applications.

The recent crises in western media all point to a systemic failure to manage context, risk, dependency, information, staff and crises in a proper manner. Our research team has spent the last four years looking at these problems and it is proposed that there is a stage beyond resilience called ‘hardening’ that makes organisations even more capable of resisting threats and attacks.

Suppose your company’s data systems were to go down unexpectedly. What would it cost your enterprise? Would you believe $212,000 for every hour you're offline, or about $3,500 per minute? That's the average figure the market intelligence firm Aberdeen Group came up with recently when it analyzed 125 organizations worldwide.

Any professional dealing with supply chains knows how complicated its management is. Supply chain disruptions are Murphy’s Law exemplified – anything that can go wrong, will. In the last five years, respondents of the global BCI Supply Chain Resilience Survey have named all sorts of consequences that supply chain disruptions may bring.

Typhoon Haiyan was the strongest tropical cyclone to have ever hit land and it lashed the Philippines with such fury last year. Many of us are familiar with the scale of death and destruction it caused, but few know about the positive stories emerging out of the storm. One of these stories involves a tiny island called Tulang Diyot which was in the direct path of Typhoon Haiyan.

As a futurologist of many years’ standing I am regularly confronted with requests to ‘predict’ the outcome of some activity or development in the world of tomorrow. If only my crystal ball were that magical ... but it also reveals a basic misunderstanding of what futurology is all about.

Getting people to think about business continuity and include it in their daily lives is one of the most difficult, underestimated aspects of a BC programme, yet it can make or break the perception of how successful the programme is. It doesn’t matter how good your resilience and continuity are, if people do not know about it, or what to do in a crisis or how to maintain it, then you have failed.

With this year’s Executive Forum running on 12th and 13th June in Brussels, it seems a good time to look back at the two earlier Forums. What does happen when 600+ years of BC experience converges on Brussels each year for two days?

Business Continuity (BC) is the implementation and management of a set of business practices that provide on-going resilience and recovery capabilities for those activities/infrastructure that are required to keep an organisation working. This is not a new concept but since its establishment in the 1980's, BC has achieved world-wide recognition as a core management activity.
